A 34mm case on a man's wrist is perceived as a ladies watch. Well, not for me, and quite a few out there, collectors and otherwise, where the gender lines are quite blurred, in the context of wearing watches, nowadays. But that's a deeper discussion for another day.

When I look upon this 34mm of goodness on my wrist, I see 270 years of watchmaking legacy and history, staring back at me. That's how old Vacheron Constantin is, in 2025.

This little marvel in yellow gold from the 1990's, despite being a complete calendar, has a clean legible dial.

I must confess, being 48 years old, there's not much one can see without my reading glasses, but my love for smaller cases and complications grows each passing year. To someone who has not experienced the brand on-wrist or hasn't explored or read upon their illustrious past of the brand, the watch may seem ordinary, from far, as the aesthetic of the case is simple and understated.

Well, that's exactly what Vacheron Constantin exudes, 'quiet luxury'.

I paired the classic timekeeper with a hand-made olive green strap, as it strikes a subtle contrast with the yellow gold case; housing a lovely 'Clous De Paris' (hobnail finish) dial bearing the signature Maltese Cross logo.

Simple joys of life.

Speaking of joy, not that I'm laughing my way to the bank, but am pleasantly elated to know that the model 47009, in dialogue here, has been performing well under the gavel, posting at a 58% high.

I am biased towards mechanical timekeepers but don't obsess over how the pinions are hand-polished, especially at this accessible price point of a 90's vintage; of exceptional pedigree. The calibre 1126 is a performer, accurate and reliable and I'm sure most of my horo-geeks out there know where it originates

…hint-hint: Vallée de Joux.

If you've figured the above, reach out, it'll be fun to dissect. The coffee's on me!

Till then, let's break the stereotypes.
